Road trip through the Smokey Mountains
May 26th, 2010 through June 2nd, 2010

Day Four: We made a trip into the heart of Savannah for some shopping and sight-seeing. The River Walk (along the Savannah River) is a lively place with seafood and music entertainment. After some shopping, Jake's parents and our family of four took a trolley tour of the town. On this tour, I learned that Savannah was one of the only cities spared by General Sherman during his "March to the Sea" in 1864, and that he gave the city to President Abe Lincoln as a Christmas gift. There were about 20 beautiful garden squares through out the city, and the homes are very old, but maintained, and that they still have servant quarters behind the larger homes that people can rent for much less than the larger dwellings. I forgot that Paula Deen was from this city, so of course, we visited to her store/restaurant. Unfortunately, we didn't eat there but at a oyster bar on the river which had yummy crab cakes. And there was Spanish moss on many of the trees...it was borderline creepy, but at the same time gave the city a romantic, warm feel. We took a ferry across the Savannah River to a little island, and we felt so tiny & fragile compared to the ocean freighters that were coming to port after months at sea. Oh, so many pictures.
